Meet our 2024 Rotary International Outbound Exchange Student Seamus

21 Feb 2024
Hi my name is Seamus and I am the 2023 outbound student of Rotary South Dubbo. I decided to sign up for the program because of the amazing stories I’ve heard from both my Mum and my Dad, my amazing Nan and my good family friend who participated in an exchange herself. I'm fortunate to come from a family that values travel and exploring other cultures and have always had the urge to see the world for myself, especially Europe. I wouldn’t have been able to participate in this incredible journey without the support from my local Rotary club, my Mum and my Nan. When I got the phone call from our District chair Nikki, I couldn't have been more excited to hear that I was to exchange to Belgium!

The lead up to my departure has been one of the most exciting and nerve wracking (in a good way) experiences of my life, I’ve turned into a responsible adult ravenously checking my Emails for updates! Finally getting into contact with my host family has been extremely exciting being able to introduce myself and get to know the people I’ll be living with. Going to Rotary meetings has been an interesting opportunity opened to me by this exchange. Every week an extremely informative and thought provoking guest speaker is invited to discuss something relevant to their life and the local community.

A major reason for choosing to exchange with Rotary is the great character development and confidence that is gained through the program, life long friendships and a great chance to be plunged into a new language and culture headfirst. I’ve been given great opportunities to interact with both my district and local Rotary clubs with volunteer work and chances to work on public speaking with presentations in a friendly environment helping me grow my confidence and abilities.

I have also had the pleasure of hosting an Inbound Rotary student of 2023 from Germany! As cool as travelling across the world is, it's also incredible to host and share your local culture and family traditions with a new person from another country. Swapping stories and learning about the similarities and differences between different countries and cultures is a chance you should not take for granted.

merci beaucoup rotatif!
