On a mission to support...

The Toyota Tour de OROC, an initiative of the Rotary Club of Dubbo South, is a unique biennial cycling event running from 6 to 12 October 2025. Covering more than 700 kilometres across the Orana Region, it is one of the longest and most rewarding charity rides on the global calendar.

First held in 2013, the ride was established to raise funds for Macquarie Home Stay—an essential accommodation facility for people from regional and remote communities needing medical treatment in Dubbo. Since then, the Tour has contributed over $1 million towards the facility, which officially opened its doors in 2019.

Funds raised through this year’s ride will support the ongoing Stage Three expansion of Macquarie Home Stay, which includes the addition of much-needed family accommodation. Your involvement not only helps make this vision a reality, but also demonstrates to government and funding bodies that this is a project backed wholeheartedly by the community.

Rider Bio

[My darling wife Helene and me at a wedding a few years back]

I've been a keen endurance rider since I was a kid. So much so, I didn't get my driver licence until I was 25! I loved cycling in the Christmas hills, Mount Dandenong and Yarra Glen areas outside Melbourne on my road bike. In my Melbourne Uni days, I and three uni mates road 360 km (min. requirement 1st year) and then 420 km (2nd year) in 24 hrs to twice earn the Audax Oppermann All Day Trial medallion. Later in my 20s, I rode my fully-laden, custom-made Christies touring bike from Helsinki to North Cape and back down through Scandinavia to eventually finish in Brussels 5 months after setting off. So now after relocating from the lockdown capital of the world, Melbourne, Victoria, to the wonderful regional centre of Dubbo, New South Wales, I have recently bought my dream bike (sorry about your inheritance kids) and I am ready for my next big adventure: the Tour de Oroc. It's for a fantastic cause - the Macquarie Home Stay facility for out-of-towners getting medical treatment here - so I hope you give generously and wish me and my riding companions all the best on this ride of a lifetime through western NSW and the Australian Outback!

P.S. I had triple bypass surgery on May 23 of this year, so I am also training for and participating in this ride to keep the "cardiac blues" at bay and to demonstrate that it is possible to bounce back relatively quickly after major surgery and to keep enjoying a healthy and fulfilling life.

My Updates

1st Milestone Reached - 20 km ride

Sunday 13th Jul
After a -2 deg night here in Dubbo, a lovely sunny Winter day beckons me to go for a ride. Reached my first milestone of a 20 km ride at a leisurely pace a little below what we will be doing on the tour.  Rounded off the ride with a well-deserved coffee and sticky date muffin from the Creo cafe at the Western Plains Cultural Centre. Will post again when I get to the 50 km mark. Bye 'til then

Medical go-ahead given

Saturday 12th Jul
We have now verified that my "zipper" wound and grafts are all sound, so it's time to slowly increase my level of physical activity. I went for a 1 hour walk with the dogs today, and yesterday did a 13km ride with a break at the zoo.

BTW. While I was sitting outside the zoo cafe, sipping my coffee and looking across to the little lake with its small islands and (free) monkey exhibits, I noticed a suspicious person approach from the side with a giant cannon on his shoulder and looking like he was about to shoot the lemurs! I turned to the zoo volunteers at the table next to me and told them what I had just seen and one fellow replied: Nothing to worry about young man. Not a Canon; looks more like a Nikon or Olympus to me :-)

Awaiting full medical approval

Friday 4th Jul
Just doing a gentle 15 minutes of pedalling a day at the moment on my trainer in the garage while I wait for my echocardiography test on June 15 to confirm that the bypass grafts are all working as intended (fingers firmly crossed).
